Weird encounter yesterday....
Being that it was Sunday, I was at my usual place - the evil Mandangos. Blah, blah, blah - gross, rude, etc. Anyway, I was bummed because a. Seahawks qb Matt Hasselbeck was the BC qb when I started and I was excited to watch him play the Pats, but he was injured and did not play, and b. the game had been scheduled for the Sunday night game (thus I would not have had to go to E.M.) but was switched because both teams are kinda lame this year. Kick-off was at 1:15. I find the afternoon games more difficult because you can't really get there early to get settled like I like to because the morning games are still on. It's also usually really crowded. Ugh. So I get there about 1:20 hoping that the morning crowds may have started to clear (no such luck). I stood around for the first quarter feeling only slightly pathetic. I thought about sitting on the floor, but thought better of it. Finally someone at the bar left and I grabbed the seat. Well, I had my book with me as usual because I like to read during halftime since I have no one to talk to. So I'm sitting there with the book open on my lap and this guy walks buy and says, "oh look, it's New England girl and she's still got her book." He goes on to say something like, "is that the same one? You're not getting through it very quickly." Of course, always defensive Casey says, "actually I read about 8 books a month." I did not point out that I was on page 150 and that I had started it the day before. (I'm just saying...) (I also didn't point out that he probably hadn't read a book in years, although....) It made me realize that the same guy 2 weeks ago had said something like, "oh there she is with her book again..." I find this a little weird. Here's the thing, if I could go all Harry Potter and bust out an invisibility cloak I totally would. I try to go through life in a fairly anonymous manner. I don't want attention to be drawn to me (when I was little - yes. Not so much anymore). I try to stay out of the way as much as possible. So these comments struck me as very bizarre. I mean I guess a girl reading in the bar is a little strange, but whatever. I always do something - read usually, but have been known to correct papers, do math work, etc. I can't help it. I just never really thought people noticed before, and I'm not sure I like it.
Oh - and no - he was not at all cute :-)
